Another Great Read

The other day, while visiting my rheumatologist, he took at peek at what I was reading, Hope in Hell, Inside the World of Doctors Without Borders, and recommended another great book to me, Three Cups of Tea. "My wife's book club read this and said it was great. I wasn't too sure if I would like it (I think most men are scared of a women's book club recommendation), but it's amazing. You should check it out".

The co-author of the story is Greg Mortensen. While returning from a K2 expedition, he gets lost and winds up in a Pakistani village. While there, he learns that the children have no school, and he makes it his mission to return in the near future with the supplies to build them one. With one school completed, he moves on to another, then another, and finally The Central Asia Institute is created. His determination and sacrifices are amazing and humbling. He truly walks his talk.

The book takes place during an interesting time. You get to see the changes that take place around the time of 9/11, the rise of the Taliban, etc. It's a real eye opener into the the roots of terroisim, and how hatred is cultivated. Greg sees education as the means to combat this hatred, and you finish the novel understanding his viewpoint. Greg introduces you to amazing people in the villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan, cultures that I knew nothing about.

Great read. Check it out!

That's what I like about you, Amy. You're an interesting person, you like to broaden your mind, and you care about things outside your little world. I like the way you reach out to "make a difference"!
