It's amazing how just when you think you have it all figured out, you have something that comes along and blows it out of the water.

James.

My fourth child, who 24 hours ago was waking up from his first, full night of sleep since birth.

I danced around all day yesterday, so happy that both he and I had slept well for the first time in months.

I know that set backs aren't uncommon, but I wasn't prepared for what he pulled this morning.

He started protesting around 3:00, and finally at 4:30 I called it quits and brought him downstairs to start our day.

What in the world happened?

I know there are so many thoughts on sleep out there, but I can tell you this.

He does not sleep better with me.

I started co-sleeping this summer out of desperation, and while the first few weeks went well, it quickly deteriorated. He learned very quickly that he could nurse throughout the night, and before I said "I've had enough!", he was nursing almost every hour. He would wake up crying, thrashing and disoriented, until I nursed him back to sleep. I would get up to use the bathroom at night, and he would wake up as well, screaming because he didn't know where I had gone.

I've tried it all; anything and everything to avoid having to listen to him wail in protest at night.

But something has to change and Ferber's progressive waiting seems to be our best bet.

Honestly, it hasn't been that bad prior to last night.

I'm beat.

Overwhelmed.

I look around my house and feel like all I do is clean up one thing after another and nothing gets majorly accomplished.

I have PMS.

There is no chocolate in the house.

It's going to be a long day.

wish I could send you some chocolate. okay my first son (
i know this is not your first) slept with me and nursed every hour. I swear they sound just alike. At 9 months DH came home and was having nothing to do with it. We heard about the cry out method which sounded crazy to me. he cried for about 45 minutes total the first night but guess what he slept in his bed for the first time ever and slept through the night. it was wonderful

So sorry.
I've been up since 3:30 with my new son. It's 6:20 AM right now... He's 20 months and we're supposed to have a meeting at the preschool at 8:45 but I think we're both going to need a nap! Uh oh.

I hope things get better for you soon!

I thought my Sam would never sleep through the night, either, so I know well what you're going through. I can't tell you when, but things will get better. I actually like my son most of the time now!

As for the lack of chocolate, girl, that's almost criminal. Leave everything and run for the store!
