We didn't get to say good-bye.

As usual, we were running a little behind so I had Dave start through security while I waited for security passes. Last time was a breeze. This time was not. Worker A could not figure it out. Five minutes went by. Worker B could not as well, and another five minutes was gone. Finally, Worker C made things happen and I ran to security.

Dave was on the other side, waiting.

We need to hurry, we need to hurry . . .

"Ma'am I need you to step aside with your children. You've been picked for a selective search."

All five of us, which would take about 15-20 minutes. There was no way we could make it in time.

Someone was trying to get the supervisor to make an exception, just to let us through to say good-bye.

Guess what?

He must not have been having a good day.

Soon they were paging Dave overhead, and he started to wave frantically, and I begin to beg. "Please. Can I just go up there to say good-bye?" "Up there" was at the front of security, not even through the metal detectors. Tears began to run out of my eyes. "Please? Please!"

"No ma'am. Look. See? He's waving to you. We'll try to do better next time."

A wave? Next time? Do they know that my husband is going to war? Do they understand that there may not be a next time?

I have never felt such panic, despair, and sadness. I am truly sick that we did not get to say good-bye. One last hug, kiss, "I love you" . . .

All I got was a wave, and that just doesn't fill a heart for 9 months.

Oh, I'm so sorry for you, Amy. That is just terrible. They obviously have no idea what it's like. I'll pray for you all.

This is just the worst thing I've ever read. I'm so very sorry. We made it easy on everyone..and just let Jason take the shuttle to the Atlanta airport. He took Aidan out to breakfast and then on to school (Aidan had afterschool playtime scheduled..so something to look forward to)..and then I took him to the shuttle around noon. Not much makes these 'goodbyes' easier..but this just seemed to work for us (of couse we would have to drive 1.5 to 2 hrs to any major airport..so that does make a difference).
Again..so glad to have connected with you. We DO have so much in common. :)
