How To Teach Math?

My first, soon to be second, grader needs help with math. He is having trouble with addition and subtraction, things that I remember just having to memorize.

There has to be someone out there who can suggest a better way to teach these concepts. Books? Hands on materials? Visual aids?

I'd love any advice!

Something to make you smile. Jack did "some work" on Anna while I was taking a shower, and made her into "the most handsomest princess in the whole universe".

Hi,
I am a first grade teacher in Florda. I use "touch math" with my kids for addition and subtraction. I love it! Basically each number has corresponding dots and you use them to count up or down. Look it up on line...it works great! Hope that helps!

Touch Math works lovely but if you are looking for a specific book try Math U See. Everything is explained simply and easily with manipulatives in that book.

I have no advice for the math. Kid L will be in 6th grade and still doesn't know basic math facts or the times table. She does well in more advanced math but the things that are learned sheerly by memory she doesn't get. Every year, the teachers try (and we try) and every year it just doesn't stick.
